Samsung unveils market’s biggest smartphone

Graeme Parton

South Korean electronics company Samsung has announced it is to release a smartphone with a screen measuring 6.3in (16cm).

The ‘Mega’ will be the latest addition to the firm’s flagship Galaxy range, which includes the soon-to-be-released Galaxy S4.

The device is being marketed as having a HD screen and will likely meet, or come close to, the impressive hardware specifications of the company’s other high end smartphones.

Samsung is thought by some to be merging the idea of a tablet computer with that of a phone – a notion which was exemplified by the 5.3in Galaxy Note in 2011. Some are even categorising such devices as ‘phablets’.

Talking about the controversial screen size, Samsung said that it made it ideal for viewing video content and even running multiple apps beside each other – almost like a desktop computer.

Those looking for a so-called ‘phablet’ device had, until now, been limited to 6.1in with Huawei’s Ascend Mate. Samsung does make the 8in Galaxy Note 8.0 but it is marketed as a tablet; even though it can technically make calls.

To cater for those who are doubting the usability of such a large smartphone, Samsung is also planning a version of the Mega that boasts a 5.8in screen. Both variants will be available to European gadget fans in May.

Davies Murphy Group, a tech consultancy, pointed out the notable shift from consumers owning phones and tablets to just using the one multi-function device. This evolution has been ongoing and was evident in the past when major manufacturers started to incorporate cameras and MP3 players into their devices.

The recent shift should catch the attention of businesses looking to market themselves with online content. While the move towards larger screens lends itself well to video content, it’ll be interesting to see what new opportunities and challenges arise as the market changes.
